About this route

When to walk it

Berlin's park is usable in every month and is at its most walkable in September and early October, when the lime avenue turns and the paths are dry. In July the open lawns are the only comfortable ground after 11 am.

Numbers are estimates for the pace named above; the ground decides the rest.

Sensory anchors

Five things this ground gives you to notice. Each script paragraph ends on one of them.

  • Sight Wide asphalt paths built for carriages, running dead straight for 300 m at a time, with lime trees planted at a fixed 8 m interval on both sides.
  • Sound The Tiergarten is a hole in the middle of a city, and its acoustic is a low urban hum rather than quiet — the Berlin S-Bahn is audible from most of the eastern half.
  • Touch The main paths are smooth asphalt with a faint camber; the side paths are sand and much softer. The switch between them is the clearest tactile signal on the route.
  • Smell Lime blossom in the second half of June, strong enough to smell from 50 m; after that, cut grass through the summer and wet leaves from October.
  • Breath Straight paths invite a long count: six in, six out on the diagonal, four and four where it crosses the roads.

  1. Start at the Spree end and walk south-east along the main diagonal. The first thing to accept is that this will not be quiet. Tiergarten has a motorway along its northern edge and a rail line through the middle. The practice here is not to escape the city but to walk through it without adding to it.

  2. The park was laid out in the seventeenth century as a hunting ground and re-planned in the 1830s by Peter Joseph Lenné, who replaced the baroque formality with long curving walks. What you feel underfoot is his engineering: paths wide enough for two carriages, laid at a constant grade wherever possible.

  3. For the first kilometre, keep to the main path and use the tree spacing as a metronome. Limes are planted at eight-metre intervals here, which at a medium pace is roughly one tree every two breath cycles. Counting trees is a more robust anchor than counting steps when the ground is this regular.

  4. Midway, the diagonal crosses the East-West Axis road and the traffic becomes the loudest thing for about 200 m. Do not try to hold a count through it. Drop the count, cross at the signal, and pick it up again on the far side. Changing the practice at a road crossing is part of the practice.

Smell · Lime blossom in the second half of June, strong …
  5. The second half passes the lake at the southern end. The path here is sand rather than asphalt and noticeably slower. That is not an obstacle — it is a natural pace change, and the soft ground makes the footfall almost silent, which is the only stretch of the route where you can hear your own breath.

Breath · Straight paths invite a long count: six in, six …
  6. Leave the park at the Landwehrkanal and walk the last four hundred metres on the towpath rather than doubling back. Water on one side and a wall on the other makes a corridor, and a corridor is a good place to end a walk that started in open lawn.

  7. Finish by stopping at the canal for a full minute. Berlin's Tiergarten is not a wilderness and never has been; it is a designed public room that happens to be 210 hectares. Walking it mindfully means walking it as designed — on the paths, at the pace they were built for.

General wellbeing information, not medical advice. The diagonal crosses two roads with signal control and cycle traffic that does not always stop. After dark, keep to the lit main paths — the side paths are unlit for long stretches.
