About this route

When to walk it

May, June and September are the best months. July and August bring the lake to its busiest and the path to its most crowded; a 6.30 am start in those months gives you the water to yourself for the first hour. The path is cleared year-round.

Numbers are estimates for the pace named above; the ground decides the rest.

Sensory anchors

Five things this ground gives you to notice. Each script paragraph ends on one of them.

  • Sight A 30 m rock island with a 17th-century church on it, sitting in the middle of a lake less than two kilometres across; the reflection doubles it on still mornings.
  • Sound Water on stone along the western shore, and the flat crack of rowing boats' oars against their locks. Motor traffic is banned on the lake, so the loudest thing is often a conversation.
  • Touch The path alternates between compacted gravel and wooden boardwalk over the reed beds. Boardwalk sections ring faintly underfoot and are springier than they look.
  • Smell Warm lake water — a mineral, slightly algae smell that peaks in the afternoon — and cut grass from the lawns on the eastern shore.
  • Breath Nearly flat, with one rise behind the castle. Six paces in, six out works for the whole circuit outside that rise.

  1. The lakeside path runs about 3.8 km around the water, with a short climb behind the castle at the north end. Start from the rowing centre on the western shore and go anticlockwise, so the island is ahead of you for the first half and the sun is on your left if you start early.

  2. For the first ten minutes, walk without any instruction other than to notice what the surface of the water is doing. It changes by the minute in the early morning, and it is the single most variable thing on the route. Once you have noticed it change twice, you are in the right state to begin.

  3. The western shore is the quieter half and the one with the reed beds. Boardwalk sections here run directly over water for about 200 m. Stop in the middle of the longest one. Water underneath a wooden platform sounds different from water beside a stone bank, and standing still is the only way to hear the difference.

  4. At the north end the path climbs about 30 m behind the castle to the viewing point. It is a five-minute climb and the only gradient on the route. Honor it with a change of count rather than pushing through at the flat-ground pace.

  5. From the top of the rise the island is directly below and the church tower is level with your eyes. There are 99 steps from the water to the church on the island, and boats run out there every twenty minutes. Watching other people make a journey you are not making is a useful part of a walking practice.

  6. The eastern shore is paved promenade and the busiest section, with the rowing centre, the cafés and most of the swimmers. Walk it at a steady pace without stopping. The end of a walk is where the practice is most easily lost, and a busy promenade will take it from you if you let it.

  7. Finish back at the western shore and sit on the bank for five minutes. The lake is a glacial one and is fed mainly by springs; the water you are looking at arrived from underground, and the temperature sits around 12-14 °C at the surface in summer, which is why so few people are swimming far out.
